About this time each year, the new crop of seed catalogs arrives in the mailbox. For someone in my climate, it is far too early to start planting seedlings indoors. Combine this with my recent increase in cooking at home and you get my brilliant idea of the day: starting an indoor herb garden.

I already have lots of indoor plants, so remembering to water them shouldn't be hard. And I have started plants from seed before, albeit with mixed results. Now the only question is what to plant?

I think the benefit of growing your own food is most pronounced when the foods are significantly better when they're fresh. Most herbs fall in this category for me, but the ones that spring to mind are parsley, basil, and green onions. Okay, green onions probably don't qualify as an herb, but I hate buying a bunch just to use one tablespoon's worth. Likewise, fresh baby spinach is so yummy that I want to see if I can grow it indoors.

And, since I already have seeds for everything but the onions, I can get started today, further indulging my impatience. With luck, I am only a few short weeks away from an indoor herb garden.
