Ouch. I thought I was in fairly good shape when I went to the gym on Saturday morning. Overweight, yes, but I exercise regularly and garden on the weekends. A one hour class should be no problem. I was wrong.

The class is an interval class, meaning we do a minute or two of intense exercise, then bring it down to an easier level for a few minutes. Parts like the dumbbell press and tricept extension weren't that bad, but jumping rope just about did me in. My calves are really not used to that. Likewise, my glutes are not used to steps and lunges. It's good to know that my exercise routine was lacking in these areas, but, ouch. I was having a tough time getting around on Sunday.

So, what did I do in my weakened state? Went flower shopping. I did my annual run for annuals. I got petunias, impatiens, and some other flowers I didn't know, but that looked pretty. I also got peppers and some herbs, since I am incapable of starting them from seed. We'll see how they do. They're something freeing about planting annuals: if you screw it up, it's only for one year. :)

This year, I have some kind of insect eating my mint. Who knew there was a bug that could take on mint like that! I just hope it doesn't spread to other herbs. It's the four-lined garden bug, or so my web research has led me to believe.

Next to the mint is the rhubarb. It was ready for a second harvest, so I made rhubarb cobbler. I also made several tasty drinks with "Pimm's No. 1", which I had never heard of before. You mix it with lemonade or ginger ale to make a fairly weak summer drink. It's quite tasty.

After lunch and the cobbler, we sat outside under the trees and listened to the birds chirp. I watched a blue jay chasing away a robin and a second robin came up from behind the jay for a sneak attack. The jay freaked, but eventually won the day and the robins went elsewhere.

A while later, a mockingbird held still long enough for me to get this picture of him.

Why does it seem that the fun I have on the weekend is inversely proportional to my perception of its length? Time flies when you're having fun? That's a universal truth.
