In all the years I've been alive, I've learned a few things. Usually, it takes some particularly painful lesson for me to really grasp something. For example, I can't tend a 2,100 square foot garden by myself, while I still have a full-time job. At least, not without losing my mind.

But, sometimes, I do figure out the way not to do things. At this point, I would like to quote the genie from the animated movie Aladdin, "yes! She can be taught!" As and example, my current craft projects are teaching me how to knit.

Instead of jumping straight into the fairly complicated sock pattern I found that requires double points, a stitch holder, and other stuff I've never done, I decided to start with a much easier hat pattern. It doesn't even involve a circular needle. I've knitted a scarf, so I know the two basic stitches. But that doesn't qualify me to follow the sock pattern. That would be like someone saying, "I know single crochet and double crochet, so I can follow any doily crochet pattern", which is patently ridiculous.

So, here's hoping I learn something useful by making the hat.
