Some of the seeds I planted two weeks ago are coming up. The spinach, lettuce, and collards all seem to be sprouting. If I recall correctly, the carrots took a long time to germinate last year, so it's not surprising that nothing's doing there. But, the broccoli doesn't seem to be sprouting, nor did it last year. I'm starting to think that batch of seeds was full of duds, because I dumped a ton on there, hoping that numbers would make up for any skill failure on my part. Wait and see on that I guess.
Tonight I planted the hot peppers. I have never had luck with them, but I really like peppers and I keep thinking that homegrown will be even better, so I keep trying. I have green bean seeds coming via mail order from Seeds of Change. They've done really well for me in the past, so I hope they do well this year, too.
After planting the peppers, I looked at my tiny plot of garden for this year, mentally took up some space for the green beans, and then looked at the stack of seeds I still wanted to plant. There was no way I could fit all of that into the tiny garden. So, I decided not to plant some things. The shock, the horror, I know. I don't think it's that I'm too ambitious with the garden, I think it's that my desires for home-grown food is greater than my ability to manage the garden it takes to contain them.
I planted some herbs: basil, sage, and parsley. I've also never had luck with sage, so we'll see what happens with that. In the front garden I sowed some daisy, calendula, and zinnas. I have a garden shopping trip planned for tomorrow where I'm planning to get petunias, impatiens, pansies, and maybe a perennial or two. The impulse shopping of flowers is really fun for me.
The weird thing for this year: hulless popcorn from Seeds of Change. I don't eat popcorn enough to warrant growing it myself, but I thought it would be fun. The rhubarb was big enough to eat this year, so I made a crisp. I was going to make cobbler, didn't have an egg for the topping, so I made crisp instead. That was way too much sugar. I'll know better next time, and it looks like I'll have enough for another cobbler or crisp this year.
