Bread and Butter Pickles

This is Grandma EnaMae Tweedy's Pickle Recipe. It makes the best Bread and Butter Pickles in the whole world. EnaMae Tweedy 1902-1997

Ingredients

  • 4 Quarts of sliced cucumbers (peel if skins are tough)
  • 8 Medium onions
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • Water, enough to cover cucumbers and onions
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups of vinegar
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 TBS of flour
  • 1/2 tsp tumeric
  • 1 tsp mustard seed
  • 1 tsp celery seed
  • 3/4 tsp pepper

Directions

  1. Peel(optional) and slice cucumbers and onions
  2. Combine cucumbers, onions and salt in large container and add enough water to cover.
  3. Soak for 8 hours or overnight
  4. Drain cucumbers and onions, but do not rinse.
  5. Combine Sugar, vinegar, 2 cups of water, flour, tumeric, mustard and celery seed, and pepper
  6. Boil for 2 minutes
  7. Add cucumers and onions return to a boil untill heated through
  8. Fill sterile jars and put on the lids.
  9. Store in the refrigerator. If you wish to store them in the cupboard, find canning instructions for pickles and process accordingly.
